The guitar was a present from my mother in 1978, so it was not as simple as merely discarding or selling the instrument. This aftermarket part converted an unusable guitar to a usable one. The only drawback would be for those who prefer the wider vintage string-spacing. Of course, the slack neck problem is an issue to be addressed separately, but one doesn't need to solve the string slippage by filling and re-drilling in order to replace the three-bolt system with a more stable four-bolt system. The narrower string spacing solves the issue of the string slippage often caused by the misaligned neck due to the slack neck pocket and less-stable three-bolt attachment system. No alteration of your guitar is required as this bridge is a perfect retrofit. As a result, it is not required to dowel and fil the original wider-spaced mounting holes and re-drill them to the narrower measurement. It only alters the string spacing of the saddles to the narrower modern specification. The true advantage of this after-market bridge is that it retains the wider vintage bridge plate specification. This item solves the problem by reducing the string spacing to the narrower modern specification. I have shown what colours were available at different times for Highway 1s and American Specials if you see one in other colours it doesnt mean it isnt. Luthiers have advised me that the problem could be traced back to faulty workmanship, assembly and routing which seems to be a problem plaguing late-70's Fender Fender models particularly with three-bolt neck attachments. A heavy touch would cause the string to slip off of the fret end. It is very difficult to finger those notes or bend the string downward. Six saddle vintage-style bridge assembly with modern-style narrow string spacing and vintage-style (2-3/16) mounting spacing. The string-spacing of the wider vintage bridges caused the high E-string to space off of the fingerboard above the 12th position. THIS product solved a decades-long issue I had with my 1978 Stratocaster.
